Community Programme

Local rugby league clubs throughout the Heavy Woollen District are uniting in a unique charity event to benefit local communities, charities and voluntary bodies.

The Kirklees community foundation, 'One Community', in co-operation with Batley Bulldogs and Dewsbury Rams have thrown down a challenge to local rugby teams
to enter their best goal kicker in a competition to discover who has got the "golden boot".

The competitors, will have to kick from various ground positions and over the posts in a knock-out competition to discover the most successful goal kicker in the district.

The first 'Golden Goal' event will take place at the eagerly anticipated local clash between the Bulldogs and the Rams, at Mount Pleasant on Good Friday, 6th April, which kicks off at 7.30pm.

The winner will be decided during the half-term interval when the two most successful kickers will take part in a shoot-out. A special trophy will be presented to the winner.

In a joint show of support for the charity initiative, Batley Bulldog's General Manager, Paul Harrison, and Dewsbury Ram's Community Manager, Angela Burkinshaw, said: "We are pleased to support One Community and their efforts to provide grants for good causes operating in the area. The event to find the best goal kicker in North Kirklees is a fantastic idea and we are sure it will be well supported by the local community and both sets of fans."

One Community Trustee and local businessman, Chris Battye, said: "We are extremely grateful to both clubs for allowing us to hold this event, which we hope will be the first of many as we look to build support for charitable groups in the area. We have a number of sponsorship opportunities available for the competition and hope that the local business community will come forward and support this initiative."

The competition also aims to increase awareness about 'One Community', which is working throughout Kirklees to raise funds and distribute grants to small, local community groups and charities.

Teams taking part in the 'Golden Goal' competition, include: Batley Old Boys, Dewsbury Moor, Dewsbury Celtic, Hanging Heaton, Ossett Trinity, Birstall Victoria, DMR, Heavy Woollen Donkeys, Shawcross Sharks and Thornhill Trojans.
